I think you just focused on a use case you had and the middleware was really more clean

If you are not over http solution
If you do a framework

Decorator is a solution to a problem
What about adapter pattern if you are doing a lot of decorating

There are a mess of patterns since 30 years and they are all great but we can find newer clean solutions
